You want your home to be a clean, safe, and healthy place for your family. However, commercially made cleaning supplies often contain unhealthy chemicals that negatively affect indoor air quality. Make your own natural cleaning supplies with the recipes listed below. The ingredients are inexpensive and you’ll find most of the supplies already in your pantry.

Safe DIY Natural Hand Sanitizer

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) warns us of sanitizers made with methanol, a toxic alcohol that can cause severe adverse effects. Follow the recipe below you to make a safe and natural hand sanitizer. You will need a spoon, a whisk, a container for mixing, and three ingredients.

  • 99% isopropyl alcohol
  • Aloe vera gel
  • Lemon juice, or your favorite essential oil. Lavender and tea tree oil also have disinfecting properties

The sanitizer needs to be 60% alcohol to kill most germs, so keep the proportions at 2:1, or two parts alcohol to one part aloe vera. To preserve the integrity of the sanitizer, thoroughly clean the surface where you will be working before mixing. Wash your hands and use clean utensils. Mix the solution until it’s fully blended and store in a well-sealed container.

DIY Natural Glass Cleaner

Ammonia discolors tinted windows, so choose your recipe accordingly. Two options are provided below.
This first recipe is ammonia-free:

  • 2 cups of water
  • 1/2 cup of cider or white vinegar
  • 1/4 cup of rubbing alcohol at a 70% concentration
  • 1 to 2 drops of your favorite essential oil, optional

Combine the ingredients in a spray bottle and shake gently. Or, below is an effective window cleaner that contains ammonia.

  • 3.25 cups of warm water
  • 1/2 cup of rubbing alcohol
  • 2 tablespoons of ammonia
  • 1/4 teaspoon of liquid dish-washing detergent

Combine all of the above ingredients in the spray bottle and shake. You may notice some sudsing and bubbles. For clean, streak-free windows, wipe the glass with a soft, dry cloth before cleaning. You’ll remove dust and dirt that can lead to streaks.

Natural Cleaning Supplies for Furniture

For a natural, non-toxic furniture polish, you only need a few ingredients. Your furniture will look great and this cleaner is safe in households with kids and pets. This furniture polish smells great and is easy to make.

  • white vinegar
  • olive oil
  • lemon

The white vinegar acts as a disinfectant, lemon is stain-removing, and the olive oil protects and conditions the wood. Mix these ingredients in small batches as you need them. It won’t keep for very long and will eventually start to smell rancid. Use 2 parts vinegar, 2 parts oil, and 1 part lemon juice and mix well in a small bowl.

Keep your home clean and safe with natural household cleaners you can make yourself.
