What is Radon and Why is it Dangerous?
Radon derives from the radioactive breakdown of uranium in the soil, rock, and water. It is an invisible, odorless, tasteless, cancer-causing inert gas that enters homes through cracks, holes, and penetrations in the foundation or the crawlspace soil. Radon is the leading cause of lung cancer amongst non-smokers and is estimated to cause about 21,000 lung cancer deaths per year.
Radon is Common in NE Colorado
One out of two homes in Colorado has elevated levels of radon. The six counties that make up the Northeast Colorado region (Morgan, Logan, Washington, Yuma, Sedgwick, and Phillips) are all considered Zone 1 for radon. Meaning, they have an estimated indoor radon average higher than four picocuries per liter (pCi/l), the action level where both the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment as well as the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency recommend homeowners install mitigation systems.
The presence of radon should not be a deal-breaker when it comes to your dream home. Qualified mitigation professionals can often lower radon to safe levels with an underground ventilation system or by increasing the rate of air changes inside the structure. These systems are exceedingly effective at reducing radon levels and are often inexpensive when compared to other home improvement costs.
